The funnel is the upper portion of the dipstick access tube, where the dipstick is inserted to check the oil level. The top of the dipstick itself, where the pull handle is, seals the top of the funnel. Being in the so close to the engine, the dipstick funnel is subject to extreme temperatures and can often crack or break when removed. Don't take the chance of a broken funnel dropping plastic debris into your oil pan, not to mention losing the ability to check for a proper oil level, and replace it now.
